Flood Damage

Timber Floor Sanding Sydney

Flood water is one of the few thing that will damage timber floors. But virtually no floor, except concrete, is immune to flooding. So timber has no real disadvantage here. In fact is has some advantage in that it can often be repaired after some types of flooding.

Water will cause most timber floor materials to warp. Contaminated water will contaminate the floor.

Types of  Flood Damage

Fresh Water – Even clean water will cause timber to warp and bend, though if he exposure is short, if the water is quickly removed the damage might be minimal.
If the floor remains damp for too long there may be problems with mould and mildew. This requires decontamination.

Gray Water – This is mildly polluted water, from fish-tanks, dishwashers, laundry or any outdoor sources. Floors that have been flooded with gray water will need to be both decontaminated and re-sanded to flatten the floor after warping.

Black Water –  This is polluted water, sewage or anything unhygienic. Floors that have been flooded by black water will need to be replaced.

Drying floors.

  • Drain as much water out of the room as possible. Then dry mop the floor.
  • Old bed-sheets, towels or other cloths can be used to soak up as much water as possible.
  • Use fans or perhaps an air conditioner to help evaporate the remaining dampness. Be careful of the electrical appliances in these damp conditions.
